Australia

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (also known as "ACMA") enforces the 2003 Australian Spam Act. United States

In direct response to growing complaints about spam email, Congress passed the CAN-SPAM Act of 2013. Congress decided that the US government was becoming more interested in the regulation and monitoring of commercial electronic mail. It also determined that commercial email senders should not lie to recipients about the content or source of the emails and that all recipients have the right to refuse them. For spamming an individual recipient, the act allows for a US$16,000 fine. It does not ban spam mail, but it does impose laws that prohibit misleading marketing techniques through headings that are "materially false" or misleading. Email marketers must adhere to certain conditions regarding their format, content, and labelling. Many email marketers in the United States use a service or software that ensures compliance with the act. There are many older systems that don't comply with the act. Services must also authenticate users' return addresses and provide a physical address. They can also offer a one-click unsubscribe feature and prohibit the import of lists of addresses purchased that have not been authorized.
